Pushing and Pulling: Microtubules Mediate Meiotic Pairing and Synapsis

Meiotic pairing in the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans is facilitated by chromosomal sites known as pairing centers that are tethered to the nuclear envelope. Sato et al. (2009) and Penkner et al. (2009) provide insight into how proteins linking pairing centers and the microtubule cytoskeleton mediate homolog pairing and restrict synapsis to homologous pairs of chromosomes.

Coordination of meiotic recombination, pairing, and synapsis by PHS1.

Pairing, synapsis, and recombination are prerequisites for accurate chromosome segregation in meiosis. The phs1 gene in maize is required for pairing to occur between homologous chromosomes. In the phs1 mutant, homologous chromosome synapsis is completely replaced by synapsis between nonhomologous partners. The phs1 gene is also required for installation of the meiotic recombination machinery o...

Recombination Proteins Mediate Meiotic Spatial Chromosome Organization and Pairing

Meiotic chromosome pairing involves not only recognition of homology but also juxtaposition of entire chromosomes in a topologically regular way. Analysis of filamentous fungus Sordaria macrospora reveals that recombination proteins Mer3, Msh4, and Mlh1 play direct roles in all of these aspects, in advance of their known roles in recombination. Absence of Mer3 helicase results in interwoven chr...

The Arabidopsis thaliana MND1 homologue plays a key role in meiotic homologous pairing, synapsis and recombination.

Mnd1 has recently been identified in yeast as a key player in meiotic recombination. Here we describe the identification and functional characterisation of the Arabidopsis homologue, AtMND1, which is essential for male and female meiosis and thus for plant fertility. Although axial elements are formed normally, sister chromatid cohesion is established and recombination initiation appears to be ...

HIM-8 Binds to the X Chromosome Pairing Center and Mediates Chromosome-Specific Meiotic Synapsis

The him-8 gene is essential for proper meiotic segregation of the X chromosomes in C. elegans. Here we show that loss of him-8 function causes profound X chromosome-specific defects in homolog pairing and synapsis. him-8 encodes a C2H2 zinc-finger protein that is expressed during meiosis and concentrates at a site on the X chromosome known as the meiotic pairing center (PC). A role for HIM-8 in...
